It’s my kids’ Fall Break at school so I’ve been trying to fill our time with some fun fall traditions. My 7 year old insisted we make caramel apples, since he also made them at school and is a pro and all.Believe it or not, I don’t think I’ve ever made caramel apples so it was time! And we were excited! I looked up a few different ways to melt the caramel and decided to try the crock pot way! I’ll tell you aaaall about it if you want to try, too!
Ingredients:
- 3 (11 oz.) bags of individually wrapped caramels
— I found them in the clearance section at King Soopers!
- Craft Sticks
— we happened to have jumbo sized ones, which made them feel more sturdy.
- Apples, of course! We made 6 of them , but could have made a few more.
- Toppings of your choice — we used marshmallows, butterscotch chips, Heath pieces, and candy corn.
Supplies:
- Crock Pot
- Medium/Small bowl
- 2 cups of water
- Cute kids to help!
Place two cups of water in the crock pot, add a small bowl inside the crock pot and unwrap all the yummy caramels.
Then, put the lid on and turn the crock pot to high. I tried stirring every half hour or so, but honestly, I don’t think it was necessary. When I went to stir the caramel exactly an hour and a half later , they melted into perfectly smooth caramel. The timing worked out perfectly because we started unwrapping the caramels and washing the apples, etc. after lunch time and then the whole process was done just before snack time in the afternoon!
The rest is self-explanatory. We dipped the apples, decorated/added toppings, and had so much fun!
Some were decorated a little more intensely than others.
The kids wanted to bite into the caramel apple as-is, of course, but I recommend cutting it, like I did. I’m not in the business of loosing any teeth these days.
I don’t think I realized how GOOD caramel apples are. YUMM! And they make a nice gift for a friend, too!
Hope you enjoyed seeing our caramel apple adventures, and feel inspired to do your own, too! Happy Fall!
XO!
